Write down the
first thing that comes into your head when you read through the next five
questions.
1. What was
the high point of your week, last week?
2. Who is
the one individual who is most responsible for making you the person you are
today?
3. What was
the most risky decision you ever made?
4. Who do
you admire most?
5. If you
were suddenly told you had only six months to live what would you do in that
time?
Just stop and
read through your answers a couple of times and see if you can recognize any
common themes. For instance, was the high spot at work or at home? Where are
you getting most fulfilment? What does it take to make you feel happy, and how
often are you able to experience this at work or home? For instance, if I was
to complete question number one, I would have to say that the high spot of
last week was meeting a friend for a drink and meal, and having the time to
share what was going on for both of us. It felt quite therapeutic to have all
that time exchanging news and information, and having someone give me really
good attention. This tells me how much I need to build in times with friends
and not to let work dominate so much.
So, if these
answers are significant events and people, what changes does this indicate?
What would be the costs, and are you willing to pay them? Perhaps you need to
think about changing your job, or leaving an unsatisfactory relationship? What
do you need in your life, and are you getting it now? How could you get more
of it in the future, what would you need to prioritize? At this stage it might
help to share any insights you are gaining with a friend and see what thoughts
they have.
